As online social media mixes with internet marketing, it was only a matter of time before services started targeting the legal profession. Here are two new services you might want to check out.

  1. Lawbby.com – Lawbby has the look and feel of MySpace, though it’s targeting the lawyer community. You can create a blog, maintain a list of friends, post pictures, create quizzes and polls, comment on other blogs and send private messages. You can search for lawyers by practice area, referral friendly, or even gender and dating status. If you like MySpace but think it’s too teen-oriented for your taste, take a look at Lawbby.com. It’s easy – and free – to set up an account, though they don’t have any checks in place to ensure that you work in the legal profession.
  2. Lawrex.com – Lawrex is a bit more formal than Lawbby and is designed as a lawyer-to-lawyer referrals exchange. You can sign up for a 1 month trial for free and then they have a flat monthly subscription fee from $31.00 to $49.99 per month. To sign up with Lawrex, you must provide basic information about where you are licensed to practice and your bar card number. They ask for a credit card up front to verify that no one else is using your name and bar card number. I didn’t make it past that since I’m not licensed to practice law but their how it works page can walk you through the process. If you are concerned about the ethics of a referral service, Lawrex provides some ethical considerations.

  1. Another possible matching service is JDFinder.com They are new, but do not require monthly fees or obligations. They email you a potential client in your location and area of practice. You only pay when you choose to contact the person after reviewing the claim. Even if they do not bring in much business, you have not risked anything. I like the no obligation, incentive-based charging for a matching service.
